Our Process – how we turn nature into next-gen materials

From sugars to FDCA – with microorganisms doing the work


Our process uses a microorganism to convert a sugar-based feedstock into FDCA. This biological step sits in the middle of the value chain: you start from sugars, move via an intermediate (HMF) to FDCA, and from there on to the final bioplastic PEF.

High selectivity and high yields under mild conditions

Because the conversion is enzymatic and biological, it runs under mild conditions (around room temperature, ambient pressure) and is highly selective. The microorganism converts the relevant feedstock almost completely to FDCA, while tolerating impurities in the input stream. That leads to high yields and allows the use of less pure, potentially cheaper feedstocks.

More efficient than traditional chemical routes

Compared to purely chemical processes, which need high temperatures, high pressure and deal with more by-products, the biological route can reduce unit operations and energy demand. This gives a strong basis for a lower manufacturing cost of FDCA and a better overall footprint when scaled.

The outcome: a PET-free PEF value chain

The FDCA produced in this way is the key building block for PEF – a 100% bio-based, PET-free polymer that can be used in applications like bottles, packaging or textiles. The biotechnology step makes it possible to bring this new class of polymers into real industrial use.
